Leighton Aspell won the 2001 Welsh National with the Pat Murphy trained SUPREME GLORY. The partnership then went on to finish second in the Aintreee Grand National at 40/1, in wich was Leighton's first ever ride in the National. Supreme Glory himself was blighted bt injuries and so was very lightly raced. We probably never saw the best from this great horse.
In the 2006 Grand National Leighton rode peter Bowens BALLYCASSIDY the 100/1 shot was 8 Lengths clear when coming down at Valentines brook the second time round. Its hard to say if he would have won, but he was going well at the time and should have been there or there abouts, with many of the others struggling at the time. Leighton rode his second Welsh National winner in 2oo5 when he partnered Trainr Paul Nicholls runner L'AVENTURE, after Ruby Walsh and Paddy Brennen rejected the ride. This was the first time Leighton had rode for the champion trainer.Nicholls was scratching his head on who to ride his horse. Jockey Ruby Walsh advised him that Leighton was the only jockey to ride the tricky horse. how right he was.
